Joan must fight for her survival and find a way to save her family, all while agonizing over one question: How is she supposed to succeed when she is not the hero, but the monster? Only a Monster is action-packed and thought-provoking, with a complicated romance. A rival family appears out of thin air (literally) and tries to kill her and Nick, Nick reveals that he is destined to kill every single monster, including her, and she may or may not have special hidden powers that no other monster has. Once Joan realizes her family’s legacy, several events happen in rapid succession. When Joan accidentally touches a man’s neck and travels through time, she learns that her grandmother was right: Joan comes from a family of monsters – people who can travel to different times by stealing other people’s life energy. Instead, she spends time with Nick, her volunteer companion, and new boyfriend. But she does not believe her grandmother’s stories.
